My Thoughts on Community

When I think of community, I think of a group of people large or small that have similar interests but also many differences. People in a community embrace each others differences and want to learn from one another. They are caring and helpful towards one another. There is a certain amount of loyalty.

Community is something that we are always looking to be apart of. We create little communities in high school with our friends or activities that we are apart of. In college, we think of the whole school as our community. We take pride in everything that our university accomplishes. Our identity is wrapped up in being apart of a community.

Apart from things we are apart of, community is also where we live or where we have grown up. I'm from Binghamton,NY and even though I have lived in Albany for about 3 years, I still feel like I am more apart of the Binghamton community then the Albany one.

I'm graduating college in a few months. Right now I am thinking about where to move to once I graduate. I don't know whether to stay on Albany, move back to Binghamton or move to a completely new city. My first instinct is to move back to Binghamton since that is my home and that is where I am comfortable. In my searches of new cities, a big part of what I am looking for is the sense of community that a city has. It's important to know what the city and its residents value, what the schools excel and take pride in, the roots and history of the city and if the city gives me a feeling of home.
